Bills expanding campaign spending pass the Senate

Michigan won’t limit how much money corporations and unions can spend to influence elections in the state – under legislation that’s cleared the state senate.

The legislation would apply many of the rules in the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision to Michigan candidates and Super PACS.

Super PACs wouldn’t be allowed to directly give money to candidates. But, the groups could use the money to support candidates through things like mailers and TV commercials.

Seven years later, Michigan lawmakers are putting the same standard into state law.

Critics say unlimited spending allows special interests to have too much influence on the political system.

The bills are expected to be taken up in the state House soon.
