Bill to fix election mishap passes state House

Legislation that followed an election snafu passed the state House Wednesday.

The bill would give communities a one-time fix if election officials posted the wrong filing deadlines.

Several cities recently posted incorrect filing deadlines. This caused some candidates to miss the cutoff.

Republican Representative Aaron Miller is chair of the House Elections and Ethics Committee. He says the bill would make sure voters aren’t punished for the mistakes of elections officials.

“This, again imperfect solution, I think is the best way to take a crack at that. Make it so that these locals in these four cities can have their election.

“It is the only adequate motivator in this case to hopefully prevent this from happening again and to motivate communities to take a look at their charters, to take a look at following state law to the last letter.”

Opponents of the legislation say it lets elections officials off the hook. The legislation now goes to the Senate.
