A pair of bills introduced in Lansing would allow undocumented immigrants to get a driver's license or state I.D.

As long as all other requirements are satisfied, immigrants would be able to get a license or state ID without showing proof that they’re in the country legally.

State representative Stephanie Chang (D) is a bill sponsor.

“It’s an issue of not just fairness for immigrant communities but it’s also something that I think is really important for our economy because a lot of our economy is based on agriculture and since we have so many migrant workers in the state who need to be able to get around.”

Chang said immigrants could contribute more to the economy if they were able to ldrive legally.

“Go to school, drop their kids off, go to church, go grocery shopping, we’re a state where you need a car to be able to a lot of those things so this is just a way to be able to make sure that they’re able to continue contributing to the economy.”

Chang said there has been support on both sides of the aisle, but since the legislature is in summer recess, no progress has yet been made on the bills.
