New frequency expands WCMU's reach

WCMU Public Radio has expanded the NPR affiliate’s coverage in northwest lower Michigan with the addition of WCMV-FM, 94.3, in Leland. The acquisition expands the WCMU Public Radio Network to eight radio stations serving more than 1,800,000 listeners in central and northern Michigan, including the eastern Upper Peninsula and portions of Ontario, Canada.

The additional radio signal will introduce WCMU Public Radio to listeners across the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas, south through Empire, Frankfort, Onekama and Manistee. WCMV-FM also boosts the station’s service area east through Cadillac and Grayling.

Rick Westover, director of WCMU Public Radio, says WCMV-FM, 94.3 is excited to expand WCMU Public Radio across the entire Grand Traverse region.

“Listeners in the Traverse City area already enjoy WCMU’s programming on 95.1 FM, a signal that will cease to broadcast,” Westover said. “Those listeners are encouraged to retune their receivers to the new WCMV-FM, 94.3, for enhanced reception.”

New listeners to WCMU Public Radio will enjoy all the great NPR staples like “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered;” coupled with robust local news coverage; classical, blues, traditional and jazz music; and educational and informative programs only available to WCMU listeners.

“WCMU has provided more than 50 years of informed, engaged and educational public service programs to our northern Michigan television viewers and radio listeners,” Jim Rademaker, WCMU Public Media interim general manager, said. “We look forward to hearing from our new listeners on how we can best meet their informational and entertainment needs.”

WCMU Public Media is a public service of Central Michigan University. CMU holds the network’s Federal Communication Commission licenses for four television stations in addition to the radio network.
