Michigan man to appeal his detention on espionage charges in Russia

A Michigan man held in Russia on espionage charges has a chance this week to avoid many more months in prison.

Russia detained Michigan native Paul Whelan last December.

They accused him of having confidential material, which he says he thought were vacation photos.

Russian officials have continued to extend his time in a Moscow prison, without producing any concrete evidence against him.

But Whelan’s family says his Russian defense attorney will appeal that detention, hoping he could at least be held under house arrest until he eventually faces a trial on espionage charges.

The attorney says that hearing will probably not happen until next summer at the earliest.
