The Trump administration will put over 7 billion dollars of tariffs on European products flown via Airbus into the U-S.
That includes tart cherries, and Michigan farmers say that’s good news.
Michigan tart cherry farmers have a lot of foreign competition.
Now, some tart cherry products flown in from Germany, Austria, and Hungary will have a 25 percent tariff.
Nels Veliquette is a cherry grower in northern Michigan.
He says the industry has waited 15 years for this ruling, but they still struggle to get federal help on trade disputes.
“These things are being pushed forward by a very small group of people with a limited amount of time. We don’t have a lobby like the steel lobby, we don’t have a lobby like the soybean lobby.”
But Veliquette says cherry growers are worried because they don’t know how long these tariffs will last.
They take effect later this month.
