Gas prices down in Michigan for Thanksgiving travel, AAA says

AAA estimates 61.6 million people will drive in the United States this Fourth of July weekend. About 2.4 million of those are travelers in Michigan. Lt. Michelle Robinson, a public information officer with the Michigan State Police, asks people to be courteous on the road. "There's going to be a lot of individuals that are out there, and especially when you're ... coming back home ... we just ask individuals to be polite," she said. "You'll get to your destination in time, and just be kind to one another out there."

As Michigan drivers get ready to hit the road for Thanksgiving, the average gallon of regular unleaded fuel will be 13 cents cheaper when compared to this time last year.

According to AAA, more than 2.3 million drivers in Michigan will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday period. They say that this is a 1% increase compared to last year.

On average, Michiganders are seeing $3.065 per gallon for regular unleaded. The national average is $3.055 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel

"We've seen prices over the last few weeks kind of rollercoaster up and down," Adrienne Woodland, with AAA, said. "With the switchover from the summer blend of gasoline to the winter blend of gasoline."

In a press release, AAA offers ways to save gasoline.

  • Combine errands to to limit driving time
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community
  • Consider paying cash
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle
  • Drive more cautiously
  • Enroll in different savings programs

"Buckle up, put down all distractions, watch your speed, and do not drive impaired." Woodland said. AAA is offering free confidential rides for impaired drivers Wednesday through Monday.
