Only 21% of Michigan's hospitals received top safety ratings in a new report released by The Leapfrog Group. The nonprofit organization rates nearly 3,000 hospitals in the U.S. twice a year for patient safety measures.

The scores are measured depending on standards like nurse communication, staff responsiveness, hygiene and nursing care hours.

In Michigan, only 21.5% of recorded hospitals received an "A" rating, dropping from 29.6% this past spring. Eight of the "A" hospitals are in central and northern Michigan, including:

  • UP Health System Portage (Hancock)
  • McLaren Northern Michigan (Petoskey)
  • Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital (Gaylord)
  • Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital
  • MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch
  • McLaren Central Michigan (Mount Pleasant)
  • MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw
  • MyMichigan Medical Center Alma

Only three hospitals received a rating of "F" for the Fall 2025 ratings, each one based in the Detroit metro area.

The rankings pull Michigan down to 35th in the nation for patient safety ratings, eleven spots lower than in the spring. This is the lowest ever recorded for the state in The Leapfrog Group's rankings.

The Michigan Health & Hospital Association told WCMU they recognize the value and transparency of the ratings, but they do not provide a complete picture of the care Michigan's hospitals deliver.

“The safety of their patients, visitors and healthcare workers is the top priority for all hospitals," a spokesperson wrote. "It is important to understand that the community each hospital serves is different. There are a multitude of factors that should be considered by a patient when choosing the right hospital."

Seventy-nine hospitals across Michigan were recorded for the fall ratings.
