People of Midland can expect to see faster internet in the next few years.

Fiber internet uses cables made of bundled fiber optic strands to transmit large amounts of data with light signals.

The construction will be done by two different companies, Omni Fiber and Ripple Fiber.

Eric Frederick is Michigan's Chief connectivity officer.

He says Fiber Optic internet is considered the highest possible internet connection.

"Fiber optic internet is considered to be the most advanced, sustainable, reliable and scalable type of internet connection there is," Frederick said in an interview with WCMU.

The two companies will begin their first construction on East Hailey Street.

Construction is expected to start sometime in late March and finish in December of 2026.

Frederick also said installing internet in larger cities takes time as companies try to maximize the potential for people living in these communities.

"Investments are being made in that technology that can solve our connectivity challenges not only now and for tomorrow but also 30 years from now," Frederick said.

Temporary lane closures could happen due to crews installing underground utilities and equipment.
