UPDATE: Suspect surrenders after over 16-hour police standoff in Coleman

A standoff between Michigan State Police and an armed suspect outside of Coleman, Michigan ended Tuesday afternoon with a peaceful surrender.

The incident began at around 11:55 p.m. Monday evening in Coleman on Northeast County Line Road near Shearer Road.

State police say the suspect allegedly exited his house and shot at state troopers who were responding to a call. The troopers shot back at him.

At around 4pm, the man surrendered after a standoff that lasted over 16 hours. The standoff included police negotiators, a bomb squad, air support and other units.

"We were dispatched to that location for disturbance at the residence, and the man had a gun," said Kim Vetter, 3rd District Public Information Officer for the Michigan State Police.

"He's recovering from his injuries. We won't have any more details about the incident for a little bit of time yet," she said.

State police say a 12-year-old girl was injured with non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and is in stable condition. A state police officer contracted frostbite during the standoff, he is good condition.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with state police policy.
