Campers across Michigan's state parks will see a slight cost increase later this year, with new fees applying starting Aug. 1.
The charges will range between $4-10 for regular campsites depending on amenities available. For those using cabins or lodges, a 7.5% fee will be applied to those with 85% or more occupancy.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources representative Ron Olsen said the department reworks costs every few years to help with upkeep.
"Our fees are intended to keep the care, maintenance, and operation needed to be able to continue to offer positive services and things like that," Olsen said. "And also to ensure that we have adequate staffing to provide a clean, safe environment for visitors."
According to Olsen, 97% of Michigan's Parks and Rec system is funded through camping revenue and recreation passports.
"It's very important to keep keep pace so that we can continue to offer what we do to the public," said Olsen.
The increases apply to camping sites located inside of Michigan's state parks and forests.
