It’s not just a basketball game, it’s a tradition that turns heads and rolls, as in toilet paper rolls.
Thousands of toilet paper rolls were tossed onto the McGuirk Arena court Saturday night before the start of the Central Michigan University men's basketball game vs. Western Michigan University.
The Chippewas used the momentum of the annual toss to take down the the Broncos 73-52 in front of a sold out crowd.
Although the origins of the toilet paper toss tradition dates back to the 1980s, this was the third in a row CMU has organized the event.
Legend has it that residents in Thorpe Hall came up with the idea of bringing toilet paper to a game and throwing it after the first bucket on Feb. 5, 1983.
Michael Rosenkranz is a student at CMU. He said this tradition is more than just about toilet paper.
“To be able to do it and bring it back to a community that shows up and shows out for such an event like this its imperative that you get a turnout like this and its always a great turnout every year,” Rosenkranz said.
According to Greg Hotchkiss, CMU's associate athletic director for communications, all the toilet paper was recycled after the game.
