The Cheboygan dam and locks. Boaters have until Sept. 29 to pass through the locks before they close for the 2024 season.

Boaters going through the Cheboygan locks will have to move through soon before it closes early for some necessary repairs, the Department of Natural Resources announced in a news release.

Any boater who wants to pass through the locks must pass before 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 29.

The $6 million worth of repairs will include renovations to the floors and walls of the locks along with upgrades to the hydraulic systems.

The Lincoln Street boating access site also will temporarily close so it can be used as a staging area for construction materials and equipment.

The latest data from the DNR says 3,000 watercrafts passed through the locks in 2023.

The locks are expected to reopen on May 17, 2025.
