U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) won the Democratic primary for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat Tuesday evening. Unofficial results from the Associated Press show Slotkin leading actor Hill Harper 78.5% to 21.5% with 18% of votes counted.

Slotkin will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former Michigan Congressman, in the November general election. The race is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate contests in country.

Slotkin declared her run for the Senate shortly after U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) announced her retirement earlier this year after serving over 20 years.

Slotkin has represented Michigan’s 7th Congressional District since 2019. She is a former CIA analyst and national security official.

Michigan Public Radio's Rick Pluta previously reported that Michigan has not sent a Republican to the Senate since 1994.

Slotkin's run for Senate also opened her seat in the 7th Congressional District, where former Michigan State Senators Curtis Hertel (D-East Lansing) and Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte) will meet in the November general election.
