The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced Monday that a two-season repaving project is set to begin on the bridge March 25, weather permitting.
The bridge will be narrowed down to one lane each way as the repaving is taking place, with the Mackinac Bridge Authority urging drivers to plan their travels across around non-peak times.
"As with any construction in northern Michigan, the best weather unfortunately coincides with the highest traffic volumes." Chief Engineer Cole Cavalieri said in a written release. "We’re glad we’ve been able to schedule this work to occur before traffic peaks for the summer to reduce delays for travelers.”
Wide-load restrictions will also be placed along the bridge during construction, with the hour of 7:00-8:00 p.m. being allocated for vehicles ten feet and wider Monday-Thursday.
Construction has also stopped the annual "Jeep the Mac" event from taking place, with the event remaining through the Upper Peninsula this year.
The two-month stretch of construction is only phase one of the project, with completion planned for spring of 2025.
