The city of Petoskey is planning to apply for grant to fund the restoration of one of the city's historical bridges.
The US-31 Mitchell Street Bridge is 93 years old.
Brandon Boatman, the North Region Bridge Engineer for the Michigan Department of Transportation, recently spoke to the Petoskey city council.
He said the city should apply for a Transportation Alternatives Program grant that would help fund the $2.3 million maintenance and restoration of the bridge.
According to Boatman, the last time the city received a TAP grant and MDOT worked on the bridge was in 2012.
“Those patches for the most part have held up, but there are additional areas that weren't addressed that we would like to continue performing preservation maintenance on this bridge,” Boatman said.
Boatman noted that the maintenance work will increase safety and extend the life of the bridge. He said there would be no changes made to the original structure of the bridge.
