Former Michigan Congressman Mike Rogers made his case to Midland County Republicans Monday evening to be the party’s nominee for the state’s upcoming U.S. Senate election.

Rogers and other party members spoke at the annual Bill Schutte Barbecue at the Midland County Fairgrounds.

The former Army officer and F.B.I. agent highlighted rising costs due to inflation during his speech and was critical of government assistance programs.

But Rogers really focused on competition with China. He said the U.S. is failing to keep up with China economically and in the classroom.

Rogers also says the Republican party needs to be unified if they want to bring home election wins in 2024.

“Remember those good conservatives that fought for family values and all the kinds of principles that we talked about: lower taxes and a government doesn't work against you, it works for you. That’s what we’re going to fight for in this election.”

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was in Midland to show support for Rogers run for the Senate.

Former attorney general Bill Schutte expressed that Noem could make it to the White House.

"I'm seeing these ads, which are part of her (Noem) whole effort for economic development.... And these are ads are terrific. About an electrician, a plumber, a welder, a dentist. And so I say to myself, 'Okay, now that Kristi, she be a good electrician, good welder, great vice president'..."
