One of the largest military training exercises in the country is drawing to a close in northern Michigan.

Military units from 25 states and four allied nations have been training at Camp Grayling and the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

The weeks long training exercise, dubbed Northern Strike, enables units to perform infantry scenarios. Units are also running through medical responses, simulating aerial missions and testing new equipment.

Major Megan Breen, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, said the training allows military units to share tactics with one another.

“The intent is to train soldiers, airmen and marines to build readiness and prepare them for what they may see in a, you know, a war fight or an adversarial environment,” she said.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited Camp Grayling this week to observe some of the training. During her visit, Whitmer also touted the defense industry’s economic impact in the region.
