Changes to around 75 state rules related to Michigan’s sales and use tax collection became final today.

That’s after the legislative committee in charge of overseeing the process waived the rest of the waiting period before they could be filed.

Supporters of the changes argue the rules hadn’t been updated since the 19-70s—creating confusion since state law and court rulings have changed since then.

But Republican Senator Lana Theis [LAH-nuh TICE] says she’s worried about the scope of the changes.

Theis said, "I have concerns that because this is so expansive that there are a lot of organizations that this will touch who haven’t yet had the opportunity to see the final product. And that raises significant concerns because it’s so broad. It literally describes the taxation of guinea pigs."

The State Department of Treasury says the rule updates are largely in name only.
