Dog fatally shot during eastern UP arrest

Update Fri. Aug. 11, 12:50 p.m.

A dog was fatally shot in the eastern upper peninsula earlier this week when police attempted to serve arrest warrants to a Missouri couple who faced child abduction charges. The incident led to a prolonged standoff with law enforcement. The dog was not a law enforcement K-9.

During the attempted arrest, the U.S. Marshals Service says Giovanni McNab exited the house, shot at law enforcement, and fled back inside the Goetzville residence. One officer was wounded during the exchange and is recovering.

Law enforcement later found McNab deceased in the home after he barricaded himself in a room with the children. The two children were unharmed.

Dr. Jeff LaHuis is the owner and lead veterinarian of the Sault Animal Hospital. He told WCMU the dog arrived at the hospital deceased and he surgically removed a bullet from the animal.

LaHuis said the bullet was turned over to the FBI for ballistic analysis. It’s unclear at this time who shot the animal.

The U.S. Marshals Service declined to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
