The push to restart the Palisades nuclear plant continues

The push to restart the Palisades nuclear plant in Covert continues. But that does not mean decommissioning has stopped.

The Palisades Nuclear Plant closed just over a year ago. Since then an effort to reopen it has gained traction, with the new state budget committing $150 million dollars to that goal. But federal regulators have not signed off on a restart. So, site owner...Holtec International continues to decommission it. Nick Culp is with Holtec. He says the cost of the work does not come out of taxpayers’ pockets...but rather from money the plant saved while it was open.

Culp says “Every site in the country has a decommissioning fund to ensure that its decommissioning and site remediation is paid for into the future.”

Culp says Holtec has yet to make irreversible changes to the more than 50-year-old plant. I’m Michael Symonds.
