S.S. Badger out of commission for rest of the season

Wikimedia Commons

The largest cross-lake passenger and car ferry service on the Great Lakes is out of commission for the remainder of the year.

The SS Badger is ending the 2023 season early after unexpected damage to its ramp system after technicians tried to resolve mechanical problems for over a week and half.

The ship was originally scheduled to run for 10 more weeks.  The Badger connects Ludington to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

In a written statement, the company that owns the vessel, Interlake Maritime Services, said there was a failure of the counterweight structure on the Bader’s ramp system.

The company says the necessary repairs are extensive, and it will take months to clear the collapsed structure and build a new one. The Badger has a capacity to haul 600 passengers and 180 vehicles, including RVs, motorcycles, motor coaches, and commercial trucks.
