The City of Muskegon is seeking artists to paint street murals on four Lakeshore Drive crosswalks.
Officials are calling it the "Lakeside Crosswalk Art Project," and the idea comes courtesy of a $5,000 micro-grant from the Michigan Municipal League.
The Lakeside Business Improvement District/Corridor Improvement Authority is accepting applications from visual artists to paint murals in the city's Lakeside Business District, one of Muskegon's up-and-coming and trendy neighborhoods on Lakeshore Drive.
Contessa Alexander is with the Lakeside Business Improvement District/Corridor Improvement Authority. She says the murals are meant to reflect the spirit and joy of living life in Muskegon.
"We are so excited to get this project going," Alexander said. "This district has definitely evolved over the years, so we wanted to bring in more art to increase visibility, make it more colorful and vibrant to our visitors and residents there."
Inspiring artists and applicants are asked to provide information about their background and training as well as a rough sketch or concept of what they would create. Photos of previous artwork should also be included.
The deadline for applications is 5pm August 7th, with awardees being announced by August 18th.
The artists will only get one day during the second half of September to complete them, due to the challenges it will create with local traffic.
