A former Michigan Republican candidate for Governor has plead guilty for his involvement in the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.
Kelley, who lives in Allendale, Michigan, pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor count of entering and remaining on restricted grounds, and could face up to six months in prison.
According to a plea agreement document, during the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building, Kelley "rushed past U.S. Capitol police officers and started climbing the northwest scaffolding," and then encouraged others to do the same, by "gesturing to the crowd below by waving his hands toward the stairs leading up to the U.S. Capitol building." He also "used his hands to support another rioter who was pulling a metal bike rack onto the scaffolding."
His sentencing is set for October 17th at 2p.m.
Ryan Kelley was a far-right leaning Republican in last year's gubernatorial election. He ultimately lost in the Republican primary to Tudor Dixon, who would then go on to be defeated by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Kelley, at the time, claimed his loss had been predetermined and refused to concede despite losing the race by over 250,000 votes.
