U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint, announced the launch of a Child Labor Prevention Task Force in congress Tuesday.
The task force is geared toward creating legislation to root out illegal child labor across the country.
According to release from Kildee's office, the task force plans to conduct more oversight of federal agencies to make sure supply chains don’t include the use of illegal child labor.
Kildee said during a press conference in Washington DC that the United States is facing a child labor crisis.
"Recent reporting has shown child labor violations are growing at an alarming rate while companies very often are quite complicit in this practice," said Kildee.
Members of Michigan’s Congressional delegation have also joined the task force, including Representatives Hillary Scholten, Debbie Dingell, Elissa Slotkin, Haley Stevens and Shri Thanedar, all are Democrats.
