The Michigan Court of Appeals has upheld the University of Michigan’s campus firearm ban. The case was returned to the lower court by the Michigan Supreme Court.
The appeals court focused on just one question, whether a university campus qualifies as a “sensitive place” under a legal precedent. And it does, according to the appeals judges.
They said that confers a heightened level of authority on U of M to regulate firearms, including a campus-wide ban that even applies to people who have a concealed weapons permit.
An Ann Arbor resident sued the university in 2015, arguing he should be allowed to openly carry a gun on campus. That was after the university denied his request for a waiver.
The appeals court ignored other issues raised in the case, saying its ruling makes answering the other questions unnecessary, at least for now.
