Projects to let traffic go above or below a railroad crossing could soon see a new source of funding. Newly signed Michigan legislation is creating a grant program to help local governments pay for the projects.
Democratic Representative Jaime Churches sponsored one of the bills. She says the program can get the ball rolling on potentially lengthy projects.
“This is about being an advocate for the people, identifying a problem and then trying to address the need by creating a table where many people sit together and use their expertise to get things done.” said Churches.
Churches says a high concentration of railroad crossings in communities like those along the Detroit River can delay emergency services and create other problems.
