With the goal of reaching the community, local authorities across Michigan and the nation are gearing up for the 40th Annual National Night Out on Aug. 1.
The nationwide event happens on the first Tuesday in August every year. According to a news release, over 16,400 communities across the nation will be involved in the event.
In Big Rapids, the event will include games, prizes and free food. The local departments will bring vehicles for people to sit and look at as well.
“All of the local agencies will have vehicles out there for people to come out and see and sit in and take a look at,” Big Rapids Community Relations Officer William Sell said. “I know the fire department will be out there again, they have a fire hose that people can spray.”
Sell said the event is a good way for the community to interact with local authorities.
“It's just a good way for us to get out there and basically say thank you for the public support,” Sell said. “And then like I say for them to just to get to know us to see that we're, you know normal people too.”
According to a news release, the event’s purpose is to “heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”
Many agencies will be in attendance, including the Big Rapids Police Department, Mecosta County Sherriff’s office, Michigan State Police, Department of Natural Resources and a couple fire departments, according to Sell.
“There'll be a lot of agencies out just for everybody to get out and say hi, and get to know us,” Sell said. “Plus… a couple of different fire departments will be out there. It'll just be a good time.”
Along with Big Rapids, Night Out events are planned in communities around Michigan, including Bay City, Midland and Saginaw Township.
