The state is asking lakefront property owners to remove sandbags from the shoreline, which were placed along shores in 2020.
The sandbags were meant to be temporary to prevent erosion during record-high water levels three years ago.
Now that most of the Great Lakes have been consistently below the ordinary high-water mark, the state says the barriers are no longer necessary.
The state says the bags should be removed before they deteriorate and leach plastics into waterbodies.
In Lake Superior, where water levels are high, the sandbags can stay in place.
