In Saginaw near the Dow Event Center, a new mural can be seen of a man with one leg walking on crutches.

That man is Jim Letherer, a Saginaw native who marched alongside Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.

Letherer lost his leg to cancer at an early age. Those who knew him said his disability only drove his compassion for others.

Terry Pruitt is the president of the Saginaw branch of the NAACP. He says many people in Saginaw don’t know about Letherer and his 54-mile-long journey for civil rights.

“He never got the acclaim here in his local community that he got nationally,” said Pruitt. “I think this is a fitting tribute.”

Pruitt says the mural will not only help the community know about Letherer, but will show that anyone can play a role in helping to bring people together.
