Michigan college graduation rates tick slightly upward in latest data

Cecilia Castelli for NPR

Graduation rates at Michigan's community colleges and public universities are going up... mostly.

Year-over-year increases are modest — ranging from a fraction of a percent to slightly under 2-and-a-half percent depending on which metric you look at.

There are also a few slight dips hidden in the data.

But overall, Michigan Association of State Universities CEO Daniel Hurley says the numbers reflect schools' hard work.

"Certainly, much more greater use of student data analytics... more immediate and intrusive advising, academic advising, as needed, much more abreast in student support."

Over 80 percent of public university students are graduating within 8 years of starting. Meanwhile, fewer than half of community college students are wrapping up within 6 years.
