Consumers Energy proposes program to move power lines underground

Nixdorf

A proposed program would move hundreds of miles of Michigan power lines underground in an effort to stop storms from causing power outages. Consumers Energy hopes to bury its power lines to limit the amount of damage and power outages the state sees because of storms.

Consumers Energy spokesperson Josh Paciorek says the program is targeted at some of the most vulnerable parts of the grid.

"This Pilot Program is going to look at burying sections of power lines across our service territory, here in the lower peninsula, to try to make the grid stronger more reliable and improve electric service for our customers." said Paciorek.

Paciorek says Consumers Energy hopes to move about four hundred miles of power lines from above ground to underground every year for the next few years.
