Bills to shield central parts of the federal Affordable Care Act from being reversed are working their way through the state Legislature.
The bills would enact into state law portions of the act that have been challenged in federal courts. The Kaiser Family Foundation says more than 2,000 state and federal challenges have been filed in the past dozen years since the ACA was enacted.
Democratic Representative Matt Koleszar says some of those cases could again make it to the U.S. Supreme Court, which has shown a willingness lately to overturn long-established precedents.
“So we want to make sure that, regardless of what happens at the federal level with the ACA, that your access to healthcare in Michigan is safe.” said Koleszar.
The bills include allowing parents to keep young adults on their health policies and prohibiting lifetime coverage limits.
