Former President Donald Trump is continuing his accusation that the numerous criminal charges against him are an effort to drive him out of the 2024 presidential race.
Trump spoke at the Oakland County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day fundraiser Sunday night before a crowd of thousands in Novi.
Trump claimed he kept auto jobs from leaving Michigan and that President Biden’s efforts to steer towards electric vehicles would decimate the state’s signature industry.
“[Democrats] want every car to be all-electric. Except you don’t make all-electric cars too much. You know who does? China! China makes ‘em,” Trump claimed.
The former president again asserted that the federal charges he faces for mishandling classified documents is an attempt to end his presidential campaign, framing it as an attack on both him and his supporters.
“They wanna take away my freedom because I will never let them take away your freedom,” Trump told the audience.
Michigan remains an important swing state for Trump. He barely won the state from Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 and lost to Biden by just three percentage points in 2020.
