Budget tops to-do list as Legislature eyes summer recess

The Legislature reconvenes tomorrow (TUE) at the state Capitol with a focus on finalizing the new state budget. That’s as local governments and school districts are about to begin their new fiscal years.

Lawmakers could be looking at some late nights to wrap up the budget before Friday’s statutory deadline. There’s no penalty on lawmakers for failing to meet that deadline. But it matters to schools, local governments, community colleges, and public universities that all have fiscal years beginning at the end of this week.

Wrapping up the budget will also clear the way for the Legislature’s summer recess.

The Legislature is also expected to vote this week on voting rights bills to make it easier to cast ballots and get to the polls. The bills are a priority of the House and Senate Democratic majorities.
