The Michigan Hemingway Society is honoring author Ernest Hemingway on Friday with a plaque at Circle Park in Walloon Lake.

The site in Walloon Lake is the 15th site in Northern Michigan honoring the author.

President of the Michigan Hemingway Society Christopher Struble said sites honoring Hemingway are important to showcase the importance of Michigan in his life story.

“If you think about the great things Hemingway was known for; hunting, fishing, his love for the outdoors, his sense of adventure, that all came from his time up here in Northern Michigan, so we wanted to document these places that are relevant to Heminway and his literature and his personal life,” Struble said.

The Michigan Hemingway Society says the author spent almost every summer at Walloon Lake, starting in 1899, when he was just six weeks old, until 1921.

Struble said Michigan’s part in Hemingway’s life story is often overlooked even though he spent so much time during his career in the Northern Michigan area.

“There’s so much misinformation about his time here in Northern Michigan and it’s often overlooked,” Struble said.

The ceremony to unveil the bronze plaque will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
