A few dozen people from Lansing’s faith-based communities gathered on the capitol lawn today for an apology for slavery. Colin Jackson has more.
In addition to the apology, organizers of the event called for reparations to address the socio-economic disparities resulting from slavery.
Justice League of Greater Lansing President Prince Solace says funds his group is raising for reparations will go toward supporting education, home ownership, and businesses within the Black community.
“It’s important that we acknowledge the hurt that’s been done. To acknowledge the disparities of resources, economic opportunities that’s been done in order to come to a table and come up with a structural solution.” said Solace.
The group says it has a goal of raising a million dollars for its reparations endowment.
