Whitmer discusses new economic initiative for the state

State of Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was in Detroit today to discuss a new economic initiative for the state. The strategy focuses on three things, making the state more competitive for business investment, increasing workforce training and education, and revitalizing places to attract families and new jobs.

Whitmer says equity is key to economic growth.

“Earlier this year, I signed an executive directive increasing the percentage of state contracts awarded that go towards diverse businesses. The goal is to get that to 20%. I’ve signed bipartisan bills investing in micro-businesses owned by women and people of color.” said Whitmer.

Whitmer says the state needs more tax breaks for projects on brownfields, which are properties potentially contaminated by pollution. She says state lawmakers are working on it amid budget negotiations.
