Michigan promotes initiative to save people money on internet costs

Govenor Gretchen Whitmer announced the Affordable Connectivity Program Act Now Initiative to improve awareness on a program that can save Michiganders money on internet costs.

Whitmer said the initiative is important to help people get access to the internet and advance Michigan.

“With affordable high-speed internet available to all Michiganders, we can grow our economy, create jobs and improve healthcare and education outcomes,” Whitmer said in a press release. “These critical investments will connect homes and small businesses across Michigan, and we are committed to achieving our ambitious goal to connect every Michigan community.”

The ACP is a program that helps lower income households afford internet access.

The program provides a $30 per month discount for internet and a one-time $100 discount for purchasing a computer, tablet or laptop.

Eligibility for the program includes households with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty limit along with people who qualify for select government programs.

Currently, 1.7 million people in Michigan are eligible for ACP, but only 644,000 people have enrolled.
