Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the completion of a new $85 million psychiatric hospital in the thumb on Monday, June 5.
The new hospital in Caro is 130,000 square feet and is projected to serve 100 patients.
The facility will replace the Caro Center, which has been operating in the area since it opened in 1914.
Michigan currently operates five inpatient hospitals which serve nearly 650 patients from across the state.
“The new Caro psychiatric hospital is an important investment in behavioral health services in Michigan for both our families in need and and the Caro community as an employer.” Gov. Whitmer in a written statement.
Mental health is critical to a healthy life. Caro Psychiatric Hospital will allow us to better care for those in need.

The new hospital immediately becomes one of the city’s largest employers in the community.
It’s equipped with a down-town themed access area that will include a hair salon, exercise room, a greenhouse and other outdoor attractions.
State officials say the hospital staff will be equipped with the necessary tools needed to provide modernized treatments to patients of the hospital for years to come.
