Whitmer names commission to set population plan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order today that creates a bipartisan commission to look for ways to attract more people to Michigan.

Whitmer says the commission's job is to set a population goal for 2050 with plans on how to hit that target.

"We all know that where someone chooses to make their lives is the most important vote of confidence."

The commission's work includes a look at schools, job training, infrastructure, and how to raise the revenue to fund it all. The Legislature's GOP leaders say the fact that they'll only get 2 appointments to the commission's 21 voting members shows the effort is not truly bipartisan. They also say the governor's stated mission for the commission sets the stage for a tax increase.
