Reports find Michigan needs to increase infrastructure spending

Huge amounts of aggregate material are used for road beds, in concrete, and in asphalt.

Huge amounts of aggregate material are used for road beds, in concrete, and in asphalt.

A new report finds Michigan is spending too little to maintain its infrastructure.

In the report....the state earned only a “C-minus” overall for its roads...bridges...water and other infrastructure systems. That’s actually an improvement from “D-plus” in 2018. Ron Brenke [BREN-key] is the Executive Director of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan.

He says Michigan has benefited from one-time federal and state funding... “The one-time infusions of money are great and they are helping.  But what we’re really concerned about is the long-term sustainable funding for the system.”

Experts have estimated the state needs to spend billions of additional dollars annually for many years to substantially improve Michigan’s infrastructure.
