The new holidays would include Muslim holy days, Hindu and Sikh celebrations, and the Asian Lunar New Year.
Democratic state Representative Abraham Aiyash is one of the sponsors. He says official recognition of these holidays would make it easier for workers and school districts to arrange time off. And he says it would send a message.
“That we are a state that celebrates our diversity, that welcomes folks to come here and know that they are respected and valued.”
Aiyash, who serves in the House Democratic leadership, says he expects the legislation will be expanded to also include Jewish religious holidays.
Michigan has 12 officially recognized holidays, including Christmas Eve and Christmas.
