Despite low ice season, USCGC Mackinaw remains active in the Great Lakes

Although ice cover on the Great Lakes is currently below the 49-year average—the U-S Coast Guard heavy ice breaker Mackinaw is still busy and helping mariners navigate the lakes.

Even during low ice years—several parts of the lakes still experience ice accumulation that can cause delays for commercial shipping vessels. But how exactly does a ship break ice? Rick Brewer was recently welcomed aboard the Mackinaw and brings us this report.
