People running for office in Michigan could use campaign funds to pay for child care, under bills re-introduced by Democratic lawmakers.

The bills are supported by Michigan's Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

"I've seen first hand how when we remove barriers that prevent women and working parents from running for office, it strengthens our democracy, it brings those voices to the fold, it empowers parents to be leading voices in their communities, and that makes all of our state and local communities better."

Benson says if the bills pass, Michigan would join 26 other states that already have similar laws on the books.

The bills were also introduced last year when Republicans controlled the state House and Senate.
