Bills would allow alcohol sales at some sports games at public universities

Alcohol sales could be coming to basketball, football, and hockey games at Michigan's public universities.

Two bills would let the governing bodies of public universities apply for liquor licenses to sell alcohol during these specified sports events and one hour before they start.

Republican Representative Graham Filler is a sponsor of one of the bills.

He says his main goal is to improve public safety.

"The universities who have tried this across the nation in general have been supportive and have seen a decrease in alcohol-related incidents and health incidents."

Filler says that's because lack of alcohol sales at sports events encourage binge drinking ahead of time.

The bills now go to the House and Senate Regulatory Reform committees for consideration.
