GOP lawmakers highlight opposition to Gotion

Some Michigan Republican lawmakers continue to oppose state investment in a Big Rapids battery project. It's run by a US based subsidiary of a Chinese-owned company.

They’re concerned about a Chinese policy that could require Chinese-owned companies to report information back to the government.

Republican state Senator Jonathan Lindsey is among those with worries.

He says the Michigan Economic Development Corporation should do more security research before investing in foreign-owned projects.

Specifically: using the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve or SOAR.

"It doesn’t seem to me that the process, especially SOAR, was ever designed to really tell MEDC that you need to go and do these things. That’s where I hope we move. I hope we can make some policy changes to direct them to do a series of reviews." said Lindsey.

The state says it’s careful to take the lead from the federal government when it comes to foreign partnerships.
