Michigan's recycling rate rising

Mike Krebs, Traverse City Record Eagle

More than 620 thousand tons passed through Michigan’s recycling centers in fiscal year 20-22.

Still, recycling advocates say more needs to be done.

Darwin Baas is Kent County’s public works director. He says the county has a goal to reduce waste heading to landfills by 90% by 2030.

“It will take a tremendous investment in recycling and materials management to be able to meet that goal in the next five to six years.”

The cities of Grand Rapids, Detroit, Flint and Alpena are receiving nearly 16 million dollars in grants to expand recycling in their communities.
