State grant funding will help the Port of Monroe build out a new shipping container terminal.

Port director Paul LaMarre the Third says it may not bring in the same scale of traffic larger East Coast shipping yards do. But that’s okay.

“It’s about value of the cargo. It’s about serving our regional manufacturing industry in a way that saves them money and allows them to be more productive. So we won’t be moving record numbers of containers, but we will be moving value containers.”

The port currently handles goods like mined materials and towers for wind turbines.

It’s also receiving federal funding for river improvements.
