Federal lawmakers, including Michigan Democratic Representative Elissa Slotkin, are introducing legislation to fund gun violence research at the CDC.
Current CDC funding for gun violence prevention studies is set to run out this fiscal year.
The new bill would put 50 million more dollars aside each fiscal year through 2029.
Shannon Frattaroli is a Johns Hopkins University researcher who's received federal support. "The findings from this newly funded research will provide guidance to communities, local governments, state and federal agencies, and other service providers about how to reverse the upward trend in gun violence that has increased at an alarming rate since the pandemic began," she said.
The legislation comes as Michigan State University, as well as schools in Denver and Nashville, are dealing with recent shootings.
